Environmental, Safety and Energy Management

Adhering to international initiatives, AcBel has been committed to improving energy management and increasing utilization efficiency, developing greenhouse gas emissions reduction programs, and ensuring the fulfillment of corporate sustainable responsibility.Not a single punishment had been inflicted due to the breach of environmental laws or regulation in 2019. For greenhouse gas management, we've introduced ISO 14064-1 GHG Emissions Inventories and Verification, ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 50001 Energy Management System to our energy management system in the hope of identifying methods of energy-saving and improvement, effectively managing the company's goals of annual emissions and reduction, optimizing energy use, mitigating environmental impacts and as a result achieving sustainable development goals.

Promotion Strategy of TCFD

By collecting international climate change information from related industries, AcBel has compiled 21 climate-related risks which have potential influence on the company's operation. AcBel also utilizes survey technique and conducts interviews so as to grasp a thorough assessment of how potential risks might impact operation of different departments of the company. Moreover, through cross-examination of probability and impact, AcBel did not only categorize climate-related risks, but also evaluate how such risks will impact the daily operation, employee safety, financial loss and reputation of each operation bases. Eventually, by focusing on the values of different risks including physical risk, regulatory risk etc., three high risks, 11 medium risks and several related opportunities are generalized.

"Sustainable Green Energy 2020" & "Sustainable Energy 2030"

AcBel has formulated the "Energy Policy" and the "Greenhouse Gas Inventory Declaration" as the highest guidelines for greenhouse gas and energy management. AcBel sets short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals and programs, with “Social Responsibility Management Committee” in each plant being in charge of supervision. With the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) cycle, the company can confirm the implementation result and continue to refine the programs, which serve as guidelines for directing the management actions and goal-setting for next year as well, so as to meet the company's goal of sustainable development and environmental coexistence and prosperity.

AcBel is committed to low carbon management, and has introduced smart manufacturing to its new building featured with LEED green architecture at its headquarter, which starts building at the end of 2019 and will be launched in 2021, as to establish more environmental friendly and energy-saving green factories. We use the following energy-saving programs to fulfill our strategy for energy sustainability management:

Energy Consumption

Energy Utilization Status in 2019

The company's energy consumption derives from outsourced non-renewable energy, including electricity, fuel (including gas, diesel, and natural gas), etc. Electricity consumption comes on top of the total consumption, which accounted for 89.84%, followed by liquefied petroleum gas and natural gas, which accounted for 7.84% and 1.17% respectively. The non-renewable energy is mainly consumed in air-conditioning equipment, product manufacturing process, vehicle fuel, plant restaurants, and staff accommodation. The total consumption in 2019 is 3.99% higher than that of 2018.

With the total energy consumption of each plant being analyzed, energy consumption in Tamsui plant decreased by 2.34%. On the contrary, Wuhan, Dongguan and Philippines plants increased by 8.84%, 1.93%, and 12.02% respectively. Except for Philippine plant, which keeps a stable energy consumption rate due to its fixed product line, intensity fluctuation in the energy consumption rate in other plants rises due to the adjustment of product composition. The increase of natural gas and gasoline consumption of Wuhan plant in particular laid in its growing employees and the cancellation of outsourcing company vehicles, which then directly became subsidiary of the company itself, thus leading to the increase of greenhouse gas emission than that of the previous year.

GHG Emissions Status

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Types

Based on the analysis of GHG emissions types, CO₂ accounted for the highest part of GHG emission with 97.74% in 2019, followed by CH₄ as the second with 1.56%, as others such as N₂O and HFCs which stays for a longer time (e.g. life cycle) in the atmosphere took up 0.71%. It is shown that the GHG produced by AcBel is relatively harmless. Over the past years, N₂O and HFCs emission have been relatively low and well controlled less than 1%, thus successfully reducing their impact on the environment.

GHG Emissions

AcBel has different proportion arrangement of employees for each plant in terms of R&D, manufacturing measures, product categories, and office. For instance, Tamsui Plant focuses on new product R&D and the manufacturing of relatively energy consuming products; on the other hand, low energy consumption products are mostly manufactured in plants in China. As a result, greenhouse gas emission varies in different plants.

We plan to expand the scope of inventory in 2022 to inspect and disclose the greenhouse gas inventory of Scope 3, which incorporates other indirect greenhouse gas emissions, including those produced by employee commuting, business travel, outsourcing transportation, and jobs, etc. in order to echo the carbon reduction goal of the value chain.

Carbon Emissions from Employee Travels

AcBel has conducted the carbon emission inventory of business trips since 2016. Business trips are mainly organized by operating headquarter in Taiwan, so the carbon emissions statistics are significantly subject to business trips conducted by personnel in the headquarters. Due to the expansion of overseas business, carbon emissions in 2019 arose from employees’ business trips, which increased by 96.75 tons, 51.08% higher compared to that of 2018.

In the future, AcBel will continue to improve the management capabilities of production bases and to take employee commuting data and greenhouse gas verification into consideration and make good use of digital network tools to reduce the number of employees travelling to various production sites. When arranging for a business trip for colleagues, point-to-point direct flight method is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of transit accident as well as additional carbon emissions and time consumed. In the future, the feasibility of selecting an airline with a “carbon offset plan” will be evaluated. By adopting the “carbon offset plan,” the company pays for the travels based on the climate impacts caused during the flight. The fares are to fund the international carbon reduction plan, as the demonstration of AcBel's practice on carbon offset program.

Waste Management

The manufacturing process of AcBel focuses on electronic components assembly, and thus our wastes (hardware, plastics, wires, PCB, cases etc.) generated by the manufacturing process make a relatively low impact on the environment. In the hope of co-existing with the environment and pursing mutual prosperity and mutual interest, AcBel develops environment-friendly manufacturing processes, such as strengthening waste minimization from the origin and pollution prevention, reducing the amount of waste produced, classifying waste and recycling, conducting good self-management beyond legal regulations and enhancing the auditing work of waste disposal vendors.

AcBel formulates “Environmental Safety Declaration” and “Environment Health and Safety Policy,” and implements the “ISO 14001 Environmental Management System” as the basis for the company's management of waste, wastewater, and waste gas.

AcBel sets up a dedicated environmental management unit and assigns special personnel to deal with waste and reduction operations according to laws and environmental management systems, so that the company can achieve the goals of effective management and waste reduction through management measures, on-site audits, regular internal audit operations, and external third-party audits.

Air Emissions Detection

To ensure the air quality meeting the regulatory standards at the work environment, the exhaust gas generated by welding electronic parts were uniformly collected by independent exhaust emission equipment and released into the atmosphere after processing in order to comply with pertinent statutory emission standards. An annual inspection is conducted on the exhaust gas discharge ports and the work areas. The air quality inspection results (particulate matter pollution, lead, and tin) are in compliance with local laws and regulations and international environmental standards.

Water Management

Due to the products' characteristics, AcBel utilizes no process cooling water (PCW) during the manufacturing process. However, in consideration of global shortage of water resources, we have managed the water resources by implementing the strategies of "zero-pollution drainage system" and "water conservation." In the future, we will gradually raise our suppliers’ awareness of water resource conservation to enhance the effectiveness of water resource management.

AcBel produces no industrial wastewater during the manufacturing process, with the exception of domestic wastewater. Tests are conducted regularly to take samples from the drain outlets to ensure the wastewater meets the discharge standard. In 2019, 100% of the wastewater discharge from each plant met the local environmental laws and regulations, and no violation of wastewater treatment occurred. Sites in China are equipped with separate rain and sewage diversion pipelines, which divert wastewater to the local sewage treatment plant to reduce environmental pollution. Furthermore, we also take actions such as the installation of water-saving equipment to achieve the goal of saving domestic water, which reduces the amount of domestic wastewater and relieves unwanted burden on the environment.

Organizational Water Footprint Inventory

AcBel evaluates the potential impact of its water use on the environment and identifies ways to mitigate negative influences. In 2020, water footprint inventory was introduced to Tamsui Plant with an aim to take stock of the water consumption, recycling use, and emission of the company, and all these measures are credentialed by ISO 14046 Certification. In general, AcBel hopes to build a well-organized water resource management mechanism through the water footprint inventory to get a better understanding of the water flows in the plants.

Through the disclosure of CDP Water Questionnaire, we share the status of water resource consumption and water saving effectiveness with the stakeholders. With the risk and opportunity evaluation of water resources, AcBel formulates control plans and performance goals to strengthen effectiveness of water resource consumption.
